Smart home tech is more popular than ever. An increasing amount of homeowners are installing systems that allow them to control numerous gadgets or functions.

According to the 2019 Houzz and Home study, one in four homeowners has purchased a smart assistant when remodeling, with more than one in eight homeowners buying a smart light fixture, thermostat, alarm or detector.

Benefits

Most activities can be completed by the click of a button or voice activation – even when you are away from home. Some common functions controlled by these smart systems include Heat/AC, lights, TV, fireplaces, music, blinds, locks, and security. It’s almost like having a personal assistant.

Beyond all the great conveniences of a smart home, these devices can also provide peace of mind. No need to worry if you locked doors, closed the garage door, or turned off lights; you have the flexibility to check or adjust all of those functions remotely. Smart homes can also increase the comfort of your space as you can program functions to adjust for situations like your home arrival, bedtime or vacation.

These are not just efficient procedures; installing smart systems could help you save money. According to a recent report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), US homes can decrease their energy use by up to one-sixth simply by incorporating smart technologies.

Smart home tech can also aid in the security of your home. Some cameras are able to stream the footage direct to your smartphone and even have facial recognition technology, so it will zoom in on a person’s face.

Budget

In years past, wealthy homeowners were typically the only ones with high-end smart homes. Today, thanks to advances in technology, smart homes can be within anyone’s reach.

However, before you start buying new devices, you’ll need to confirm your budget and what activities you’d like to control. Although you have the freedom to start small and enhance your smart system overtime, you’ll want to ensure all items are compatible. It would be cumbersome to have to control each activity with a different device.

If you do have plans to control a wide array of functions within your home, technology experts recommend beginning with command center devices such as Apple HomeKit, Amazon Echo or Google Home. It is also recommended to have a good wireless router that offers high signal strength throughout all areas of your home.
