Fall is the perfect time to start a basement remodel. As the cold weather sets in, it’s ideal to create a warm space in your lower level to enjoy football games and other sporting events. Why go to a bar to watch the game, when you can enjoy it in the comfort of your own home with friends and family. Better yet, watch the game in your Mancave. Here are a few things you can do to create the ultimate space for those events.

Plan out the Space

Take a look around at the room. Does it have enough outlets for your TV, sound system, beer refrigerator and anything else that needs power? If not, it’s a great time to add more outlets. Basements typically lack natural light. Brighten the area by incorporating ample lighting. A lot of people choose to add a home theater sound system. It’s the perfect time to install this setup while the walls are exposed.

Basements are prone to moisture. Before you start a basement renovation, you should confirm there isn’t water damage or mold. You should also make sure you are in good shape to prevent any future issues. It’s highly recommended to engage a professional like us when you you have any of these electrical or construction needs.

Layout

Furniture placement is key to allow a comfortable space for all of your guests to relax and enjoy the party. Mounting the TV on the wall is a great way to create extra space and achieve the height you need to give everyone a good view. If that isn’t an option, consider placing the TV in a corner to allow a larger viewing area.

You need to make sure you have enough comfortable seating. Large sectionals are a great choice to accommodate guests. Placing a coffee table in the center of the sectional will offer a great spot for food and drinks. You can provide additional seats by setting up a bar or counter-height table with stools behind the furniture. We love the setup shown hereFor very large parties, consider adding some folding chairs, a bean bag or some floor cushions.

If space is tight in the rec room, you might want to offer a second viewing area. You could create a bar with a second TV so guests can mingle in that space. Having this second TV is also helpful so people don’t miss parts of the game while they are grabbing more food or another drink. It wouldn’t be a true Mancave without a bar, right?!

No game is complete without beer and snacks. Make sure your counter space at the bar is large enough to accommodate everything. If it’s not, you can add another table. To avoid having a tub of ice or coolers to chill your drinks, invest in a full size or mini refrigerator. A wine cooler would be a great solution too!

Decor

One of the easiest ways to add character to to your once boring basement is to create a wood, tile, stone or brick feature wall. Browse some great examples here

We love the way the brick feature wall turned out on one of our recent basement renovations. Our clients did a wonderful job of adding the finishing touches by incorporating some bar and sports memorabilia. Check out the pictures here.

Football parties aren’t begging for extravagant decor; just a few fun pieces here and there to keep spirits running high. You can find additional decor inspiration here.

All that is left now is to sit back and enjoy watching the game!
