What about all the materials you need to select for your basement remodel? Here is an overview of the major materials you’ll need to select.

Flooring

Carpet is traditionally the preferred choice for basements since it can fit a wide range of budgets and styles. If you want a cozy space to relax and watch television, carpet would be the ideal selection. Think about it; you are more likely to spend time in a space that you are comfortable and warm. Additionally, carpet adds noise dampening features that make the space feel even more inviting. You can achieve an ultra plush feeling if you add a thick pad under premium, high pile carpet. If your interested in the warmth of carpet but need something affordable and durable, you can opt for a low pile style. This could be a good option for a children’s play room.

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is becoming a more popular selection for basements. Finished basements are commonly used as an entertainment space and bars tend to be the focal point. You can find LVT styles that resemble wood patterns to achieve the look of a hardwood floor. LVT is durable and ideal for spaces where moisture or spills could be an issue. This makes it a great selection for bathrooms, bars, kitchens, and recreation spaces. LVT tends to be more affordable than ceramic or porcelain floor tiles; however, if you choose to upgrade to ceramic or porcelain tile, you could add a floor heat system to make your basement feel even warmer and more inviting.

Paint
For basements that lack natural light, paint can look darker than anticipated once applied to your walls.  Try to select a lighter shade to make the space appear larger, but don’t hold back from adding color to your basement. White basement walls can look dull; instantly add richness to the space by introducing a color or a warm neutral. If you love the crispness of white, introduce a texture with shiplap or tile to keep the eye interested.

Ceiling

Drop ceiling styles were common in the past due to their easy access to the components above. Today, drywall is a more common ceiling selection as it’s more aesthetically appealing and you can potentially gain some ceiling height.  Access panels are a great solution for accessing plumbing and electrical where needed. Looking for an affordable option? Consider painting your ceiling grey or black and leaving your utilities exposed for an ultra industrial style.

Budget

Curious how much it will cost to finish your basement? Expect to spend approximately $40 to $60 per square foot. Of course this estimate depends on the changes made to your basement and your material selections.

With a finished basement, you’ll have a space for your family to create new memories while comfortably hosting friends and family.  Not only will you be adding to your living space, but you may also increase your home value especially if you add a bedroom or bathroom. If this isn’t your “forever home,” imagine how attractive your new wet bar or home theater will look to prospective sellers.
