Where a suitable duct route is feasible, an outdoor-vented hood can remove captured cooking air, heat and moisture from the home. A ductless hood filters air and returns it to the kitchen, so its performance and maintenance needs differ. Choose the ventilation approach alongside the cooking appliance and layout, rather than treating the hood as a decorative item at the end of the project.

Before ordering, check the hood’s installation instructions, the route to the exterior and the space available around cabinets or an island. Have the project team review applicable ventilation and make-up air requirements for the proposed equipment. If a recirculating model is chosen, confirm which filters it needs and how they are cleaned or replaced. Include these decisions in your kitchen renovation plan so the appliance, cabinetry and ventilation work together.
